Present customer base has reached more than 44 crores. In just 12 years Airtel has achieved about 40 million mobile customer base. In the past two months reliance communication GSM division has added about 1.1 million customers. It is expected than indian mobile customer base will cross 70 crore mark much ahead of previously planned 2030.

TRAI has been doing feasibility study and workout plans for the same. UPA governments agenda of creating UID (Unique identification number) also in full swing. Having a common numbering for UID and mobile number is something DOT should think of, As per industry sources work is in progress.
